The theme for most organizations, groups and the government in the past week has been postponing or outright cancellation of events and activities.
Province-wide, any public gathering of 250 people or more are now banned, and as of the new directive on Monday from the province’s chief medical health officer, this includes churches or other faith-based organizations.
In the Weyburn and surrounding area, most events that were scheduled to be on or to take place soon have been cancelled, along with the closure of facilities such as the Family Place and the Weyburn Humane Society.
Late on Monday, the City of Weyburn announced that all leisure facilities will close on Tuesday, March 17, including the Weyburn Leisure Centre
The Weyburn branch of the Royal Canadian Legion announced on Tuesday evening they are closing their doors for the next two weeks. The grand opening for the Salvation Army’s new location was to be held on March 17 and has now been postponed to a later date yet to be determined.
The Weyburn Rotary Club has cancelled their 100th anniversary banquet which was to be held on April 3, and this will be rescheduled for the fall.
The Quota International of Weyburn club also announced on Monday they are postponing their Women of the Year Awards gala luncheon, which was to be held on Wednesday, April 8, with singer Tenille Arts set as the guest speaker.
As announced on Monday, all schools in Saskatchewan will close as of Friday, March 20 for an indefinite period. All extracurricular activities had been cancelled already due to sanctions by the Saskatchewan Teachers Federation. This included the Weyburn Comp’s Cheer Showcase which was to be held on March 24.
The Early Learning Information Fair which had been set for March 26 at the Weyburn Comp has been postponed to a later date.
The Weyburn Wildlife Federation announced late Monday they are postponing the Fred Garner Memorial Banquet set for April.
The karate tournament scheduled for the Vilcu Karate Klub on the weekend of March 27-28 has been postponed to a later date, along with the reception for retiring sensei Harold Vilcu.
The Weyburn Free Methodist Church has now cancelled their Sunday morning worship services for the next three weeks, on March 22, 29 and April 5. The services will be live-streamed on their web page, and will broadcast live on AM 1190.
The Weyburn Dance Club’s event set for March 27 at the Captain’s Hall has been cancelled.
Southeast College campuses will remain open, but for the week of March 17-20, in-person classes are suspended for full time, part time, Adult Basic Education, English as Another Language and University of Regina classes. There will be more information will be provided to students on Friday, March 20, regarding online or alternative delivery, where possible, and beginning on Monday, March 23, online courses or alternative delivery programming for students will be provided where possible.
The Weyburn Chamber of Commerce is postponing the President’s Luncheon and AGM, and the WEYBEX Awards, until a later date.
Virtually all sports activities are suspended, including minor hockey, minor ball, the SJHL, as well as professional sports like the NHL, the NBA and Major League Baseball, which had begun their spring training camps.
