Education Minister Don Morgan has proclaimed the Week of October 19-25 as Saskatchewan Library Week.

This year "Libraries Inspire" will be the theme used to encourage all Saskatchewan citizens to look to their local libraries for resources in their pursuit of life-long learning.

"We have more than 1,000 libraries across Saskatchewan, and each one offers literacy and learning opportunities for everyone," Morgan said. One such recent local example is the program offering tutoring services for new comers at the Weyburn library. Morgan also states that "The dedicated library staff and trustees are doing tremendous work contributing to stronger communities in our province by promoting culture, education and literacy excellence."

The Saskatchewan Library Association (SLA) is a non-profit organization which aims to further the development of library services in Saskatchewan.

"Libraries in Saskatchewan are offering more dynamic services than ever before," SLA president Gwen Schmidt said. "From support of inquiry learning in school libraries, to seamless borrowing of books between university and college libraries through the Reciprocal Borrowing Program, to the addition of downloadable NNELS audiobooks for people with print disabilities and the addition of downloadable e-books in other languages for newcomers, the people of Saskatchewan are benefiting from the creative and strategic collaborations that libraries and their staff strive to develop and make user-friendly every day. I am always proud of the work we do here, and most especially during Saskatchewan Library Week."

Saskatchewan Library Week is held annually in conjunction with Education Week and has been co-ordinated and sponsored by the SLA since 1976.

The Weyburn Library is at 45 Bison Avenue and encourages residents to stop by and learn about what your local library has to offer.
