The Weyburn and District Chamber of Commerce recently assisted one of its Members in growing their business with the help of the District Regional Planning Commission.
"A few months back the Weyburn Livestock Exchange came to the Chamber expressing concerns that their current location would not support the increase in business they are hoping to attract," said Chamber Manager Jeff Richards, "but until the increase is proven, they're just not in a position to invest in an entirely new facility."
With livestock auction marts closing in neighboring towns and cities, Weyburn is expecting to pick up that business as well as continue with their own growth plans. The Weyburn Livestock Exchange is currently located within the City of Weyburn next to the Landfill.
"The current City Plan would not have space for an expanded livestock operation such as was being discussed", explained Richards, "so we met with the Weyburn District Regional Planning
Commission and decided that we should get all the parties in the room. RM Reeve Carmen Sterling was present and she was able to present some opportunities to the Weyburn Livestock Exchange, but none of those were feasible at the time. In the end, the City of Weyburn passed a resolution from
Council offering the Weyburn Livestock Exchange a 10 year lease on some adjacent land so that the business can firm up its future plans and work towards a permanent solution."
The Weyburn District Regional Planning Commission is an inter-municipal planning body with members from Weyburn City Council, RM of Weyburn Council, the Chamber, and an independent
Chair along with support from a contracted Planner.
"Clearly the Chamber is glad to see everyone working together to build this community," added
Richards. "The growth and success of businesses will ensure a prosperous future for everyone.
