The Estevan Police Service has announced that charges have been laid in connection with a fatal vehicle-pedestrian collision last October.
Estevan Police Chief Paul Ladouceur announced on Friday afternoon that an investigation into the collision has been completed.
Metro Ignatiuk, 68, has been charged with dangerous operation of a motor vehicle causing death and dangerous operation of a motor vehicle causing bodily harm, under the Criminal Code.
The accident occurred on Oct. 6, 2015. Kathy Batke, 69, and an unnamed man, aged 74, were crossing Fourth Street in the 1200-block when they were struck by a pickup truck driven by Ignatiuk.
Batke died of her injuries in hospital in Regina on Oct. 8. The man suffered extensive injuries that left him in the Wascana Treatment Centre for a lengthy period of time. Ladouceur noted the man will be affected by those injuries for the rest of his life.
Police have received some criticism for not pressing charges sooner, but Ladouceur said they needed time to go through all of the evidence, to view the data collected from the scene and work with the Crown.
They also had to decide whether to charge Ignatiuk under the Criminal Code or the Traffic Safety Act.
He is scheduled to appear in court on May 16.
Next week's edition of the Mercury will have more on this story.
