Charities and non-profits encouraged to apply for desktops

Cenovus Energy is holding its third annual Great Computer Give-Away, aiming to donate 300 refurbished desktops to charitable and non-profit groups to help them deliver much-needed programs in the communities they serve. In the two previous campaigns, Cenovus has donated a total of about 660 computers valued at $113,000.

Organizations in Calgary and other communities in Alberta and Saskatchewan where Cenovus operates are invited to apply for the computers between May 21 and May 31 by visiting cenovus.com/responsibility/Cenovus-great-computer-giveaway.html.

Cenovus will provide a maximum of three units per group and is working with Calgary-based DeliverGood, a group that connects charities and non-profits who need supplies, equipment or furniture, with those who have items to donate.

"We believe in continuing to build on this successful program as a way to further enhance our community partnerships,'' said Leanne Courchesne, Group Lead Community Investment. "When you partner with Cenovus you get more than just our financial help; you get a company that wants to be involved. By donating these computers we're investing in organizations and helping them increase their ability to provide valuable programs and services in our communities."

Last year, a total of 137 organizations received 330 computers through the program. The Family Place, Weyburn was one of the recipients that quickly put the computers into use.

"Our organization and some of our families benefitted greatly from your program. We use one of your computers in our office every day. Our old one was failing on us and your Give-Away came at the perfect time," said Dawn Gutzke, Executive Director, The Family Place. "Being a non-profit organization, we make-do with what we have. Some of the computers were given to families who are new to Canada. Some of them were given to a few of our high needs families. These people would not have been able to have a computer without having a program like yours."

The desktops become available each year as Cenovus replaces computers in working condition that are more than five years old. The computers are cleaned of all company information and a basic operating system is installed. Keyboards, mice and monitors will also be part of the package provided to successful applicants.

As an Imagine Canada Caring Company, Cenovus has committed to setting aside one percent of its pretax profit to provide financial, in-kind and volunteer support to the communities where we live and work.
