Weyburn city council unanimously voted on Monday evening to pass their 2012 budget with a zero increase in property taxes, and will now South (Highway 35) and 22nd Avenue.
"The District Planning Commission took a hard look at this. The RM indicated they are prepared to have them move into the RM," said Mayor Button. "We weighed this very thoroughly, and we engaged the chamber."
She noted they assured the city that extra business will not bring extra smell to the area, as the animals are not there permanently, but only brought in for sale, and are then removed again.
The plans for the next municipal election were approved by council, with most councillors not saying yet if they are going to run again. Election day will be held on Wednesday, Oct. 24, 2012, and this year the vote will be for four-year terms.
In a poll by the Weyburn Review at the end of the council meeting, Mayor Button indicated she will be running again, and Coun. Bill Rudachyk said he will not run again after 21 years of service to the city.
Councillors Stephanson, Dick Michel and Nancy Styles all indicated they would say after the summer holidays, and the other councillors did not say.
From the report on the municipal election filed by returning officer and city clerk Donette Richter, the city will not use a mail-in ballot system as will be used in Regina and Saskatoon, but rather the city will monitor how well the mail-in ballot system works there before implementing it here.
In the meantime, the city will continue to use advance, special and mobile polls to provide extra opportunities to vote other than on election day.
Polling will be from 9 a.m. to 8 p.m. on election day, and polling stations will be set up at St. Dominic Savio School, Assiniboia Park School, Haig School and Souris School. Those who formerly voted at St. Michael School will now vote at Haig School.
Voters will be registered at the polls on election day, and this year voter ID will be required for all voters. The names of the candidates will be listed according to how the names are drawn from a receptacle, and there will be no bylaw setting spending limits or requiring disclosure of election campaign contributions and expenses. Also, criminal record checks will not be required by candidates when filing papers to run for election.
In other council business, this coming summer the council will meet only once in each of July and August, and the council meeting set immediately before election day will be cancelled.
Thus, in the summer there will be council meetings held on the third Monday of each month, on Monday, July 16, and Monday, Aug. 20, and the meeting on Monday, Oct. 22 will be cancelled.
