City has new director of planning and development

At a recent meeting of Weyburn city council, Martino Verhaeghe was appointed as the city's new director of planning and development. Past director Doug Mulhall recently retired from the position.



At a recent meeting of Weyburn city council, Martino Verhaeghe was appointed as the city's new director of planning and development. Past director Doug Mulhall recently retired from the position.

Verhaeghe is a licensed professional municipal planner and comes to the City of Weyburn with 10 years of experience in Saskatchewan and Alberta. Verhaeghe has spent time working for the Alberta and Saskatchewan governments, most recently as the Manager of Provincial Interest.

Martino commented that he has been keeping an eye on Weyburn for some time and when a position came available he jumped at the opportunity. Martino sees Weyburn continuing with the busy pace of development with "many private developers taking an interest in Weyburn with lots of supply of land".

The Travelodge is entering the finishing stages of their new four-storey hotel. The hotel is a full service, state of the art facility with meeting rooms and restaurant.

The city of Weyburn has begun land leveling for future residential development on the north end of the city. The development area is approximately 100 to 120 acres.

SaskPower has constructed a new 56,000 sq/ft. service centre building on Ebel Road. The office will serve as a new headquarters for SaskPower operations in the region.

Superior Lodging Corp. has acquired land from the City of Weyburn for the construction of a Microtel brand hotel. The $5-6 million project is a four-storey, 90-room hotel, with construction to begin fall 2012.

The Weyburn Comprehensive high school addition and renovation is in the framing stage, with significant progress being made on the Triple C performing arts centre. This is "Phase 1" of a multi-million dollar facility upgrade project that will make the school a state of the art educational facility.
