The City of Estevan is launching an eight-day cleanup campaign in May that they hope will boost the community’s appearance.

Operation Clean Sweep will run from May 16 to 23. There will be cleanups throughout the community during the first four days, and four days of free landfill service during the final four days.

The campaign will start on May 16 with City of Estevan employees cleaning the main entrances to the city and the outlying areas. During the next day, they will be cleaning all city properties and green spaces, including boulevards, medians, parks and naturals areas.

Employees will focus on the northern half of the city on May 18 by picking up contained organic waste materials, such as twigs, leaves and yard refuse, from the front of the driveway of local residences.

Branches must be bundled in three-foot lengths. Leaves and yard refuse will have to be bagged. All items must on the driveway before 8 a.m. that day.

They will be doing the same thing for people who live in south Estevan the following day.

“Call backs will not be happening in areas, so please make sure items are out in time,” said Norm Mack, the roads and drainage manager of the city’s public works department.

A free landfill weekend will run from May 20 to 23 for City of Estevan residents. Charges will be assessed for freon appliances such as refridgerators, freezers, dehumidifiers and air conditioners. Hazardous materials will not be accepted.

“I think this is a great initiative,” said city manager Jeff Ward. “We haven’t done it before. Norm has kept the streets clean, and they look good. We’re getting a lot of good comments (from people saying) ‘Keep up the good work there.’

“This is just a good chance for the whole community to come together and get some civic pride and keep the streets clean.”

Mayor Roy Ludwig added that council has received requests in the past to have a cleanup campaign to compliment the free landfill weekend, and he hopes the public gets behind this concept.
