Weyburn City Council has moved to delete the Banquet Assistance Grant offered by the City of Weyburn to provincial, national and international conventions at their regular council meeting on April 14.
The motion was put on the floor by Weyburn Mayor Debra Button, and was passed by a 4-3 vote.
"I thought long and hard about how we would keep the City of Weyburn out of this same predicament in the future and there was no way," said Button. "When I took a look how much the city spent over the past three years, it just didn`t make sense to keep this policy in place."
Over the past three years, the city has paid out $1080 in Banquet Grant Assistance for groups hosting Provincial, National or International conventions.
In a second related motion, Button moved to revoke the grant for the Pro-Life Convention last weekend, which was passed by council in February.
The motion was defeated by council 5-2.
"We didn't sponsor the speaker. We sponsored the banquet. It's not our job to be moral police and we have to stay within our commitment, assuming they met the requirements," said Councillor Rob Stephanson.
