Weyburn Mayor Debra Button today announced that the City has successfully negotiated a new contract with the members of the Weyburn Police Association, who have been working without a contract since January 1, 2012.
The new contract would provide the 17 members of the police association bargaining unit (not including support staff) with a salary increase of 12.5 per cent over three years, specifically 4.5 per cent effective January 1, 2012, four per cent effective January 1, 2013 and four per cent effective January 1, 2014.
"I am very pleased that we were able to come to a negotiated settlement that is fair for both the police and the taxpayers," said Button. "This contract has been the subject of a lot of discussion and there have been significant compromises on both sides but that's what negotiation is all about. The members of the Board of Police Commissioners and I are confident that this agreement is in the best interests of everyone in Weyburn."
Constable Shane St. John, president of the Weyburn Police Association was also pleased that they were able to come to an agreement at the negotiating table.
"We are happy that the collective bargaining process has once again come to a satisfactory conclusion," said St. John. "Of course, as the Mayor pointed out, in any bargaining process both sides have to be able to compromise. There have been many factors for both us and the City to weigh and consider but, in the end, I have no problem endorsing this agreement to our members.
On behalf of everyone in Weyburn, Mayor Button also emphasized the City's gratitude for everything the police contribute to life in Weyburn.
