A Weyburn man faces charges following a fatal collision near Moose Jaw on Sunday, prompting a comment from the Weyburn Police Service.
“We as a Police Service are extremely disappointed at the number of drinking drivers we see on the streets on a weekly basis. While the situations noted in the police report each ended with nothing more than charges, for the second time in less than three weeks a Weyburn area man has been involved in and charged with impaired driving causing death,” said Insp. Rod Stafford on Monday.
The latest was a collision on Sunday on Highway 39 that took the life of an innocent driver.
• During the past week, the city police also received numerous calls about Canada Revenue Agency scams. The Weyburn Police Service remind residents that unless you have been involved with CRA and have received formal documentation through the mail, they will never call and attempt to obtain information or make threats about collecting taxes. There were also several other forms of on-line scams reported this week.
• The Weyburn police responded to a complaint of a vehicle colliding with a building in the downtown core on Jan. 30. The damage was only superficial and no further action was taken.
• City police were dispatched to Bean Crescent regarding a report of a disturbance at about 10:20 p.m. on Friday. Upon arrival it was learned that a number of youth aged 15-16 carried over an incident from school that led to a minor altercation. All parties were warned of their actions and advised that they each could have been charged under the fighting bylaw.
• Weyburn police responded to a domestic dispute in progress at about 12:50 a.m. on Saturday. Upon arrival it was learned that a 43-year-old man had assaulted his 34-year-old spouse and five-year-old child. He was taken into custody without incident and was later released on strict conditions. Police later conducted a compliance check in relation to the above incident and found the accused to be present in violation of his earlier imposed release conditions. He was arrested without incident and has been remanded in custody.
• City police conducted a traffic stop at about 9:40 p.m. on Saturday. During the stop it became apparent that there was a small amount of marijuana in the vehicle as well as open alcohol, and a ticket was issued for the alcohol infraction.
• Weyburn police conducted a traffic stop at about 2:40 a.m. on Sunday. The 26-year-old male driver was found to be driving under the influence of alcohol and was issued a 72-hour driving suspension and the vehicle was impounded for three days.
• City police received a 911 call from a distraught male at about 6:45 a.m. on Sunday. After learning that the call came from the hospital, members attended only to find that the 24-year-old male had fled on foot and was believed to be suffering from mental health issues. He was apprehended after a short foot pursuit and taken into custody to be seen by a mental health professional.
• Weyburn police received a report of a vehicle having made a U-turn on a street nearly causing a collision on Sunday.
Police wish to remind drivers that U-turns are only permitted where allowed by a sign or at an intersection that is not controlled by traffic lights. U-turns mid-block are a violation of the Traffic Bylaw.
• City police received a call from a concerned citizen regarding a possible impaired driver at about 1:10 a.m. on Monday. The vehicle was located, and as a result, a 23-year-old male has been charged with impaired driving offences.
