One victim of a vehicle-pedestrian collision on the 1200 block of Fourth Street has died after being airlifted to a hospital in Regina. Kathy Batke, 69, died from her injuries in hospital care on the morning of Oct. 8.

Batke and a male, aged 74, were struck by a westbound pickup truck, while crossing Fourth Street, on the afternoon of Oct. 6.

The status of the male victim was unavailable before the press deadline of the Mercury.

According to a media release from the Estevan Police Service (EPS), emergency personnel and several bystanders tended to the victims of the incident. Both victims were transported to St. Joseph’s Hospital. The driver of the truck was visibly shaken by the incident, but uninjured.

Police shut down the 1200 block for approximately two and a half hours, while the scene of the incident was processed. The RCMP Integrated Traffic Unit assisted with traffic control, while the RCMP’s Forensic Collision Investigator assisted in processing the scene.

Due to the severity of their injuries, both victims were airlifted out of Estevan, by STARS in the case of one victim, and fixed wing air ambulance in the case of the other. The chief coroner is involved with the investigation, working in conjunction with EPS.

Sgt. Kevin Reed noted there have been no charges laid, and that an investigation into the incident is ongoing.
