Community open house to help showcase service groups and clubs

Every year the Arcola School has a back to school barbeque. It will again be held, but to a much larger degree. The event is not being limited to school families and everyone in the area is encouraged to stop by the school for community information, from not only Arcola but the surrounding towns as well, between 5 p.m. and 7 p.m.

"It is the back to school barbeque, but it is a community open house hosted at the school," one of the organizers, Teresa Johnston explained.

The event has 20 confirmed service clubs and churches including 4-H, girl guides, tai chi, hockey, skating, volleyball, the community band, and many more.

Johnston says the evening developed after hearing the idea from another community, while also taking into account all of the new people who come through the local towns.

"There's so many new people in our communities all of the time that it's nice to have the different activities and groups in one venue at one time, so people can ask their questions and make the decisions about what they would like to become a part of," Johnston explained. "We have different groups for either adults or youth to join and encourage anyone interested in learning more about the different groups in the surrounding communities."

With 20 confirmed, Johnston also encourages service groups and clubs who have not been contacted or have decided to participate to contact herself at (306)577-7316 or by calling the school at (306)455-2340.

The evening will see numerous information booths on what is offered in Arcola and surrounding towns, while also providing some fun for youth as bouncers will be set up in the gym to keep children active and having fun.
