Building homegrown talent is the name of the game for SaskPower, as 20 students scattered throughout Southeast Cornerstone School Division are completing two high school credits, Introduction to Power Engineering 20L and 30L.
They are preparing to challenge industry-recognized 5th Class Power Engineering Certification in June. This year, students from Weyburn, Yellow Grass, Stoughton, Gladmar, Carnduff, Moosomin, Radville, Rocanville, Lampman, Oxbow, and Estevan participated in this career exploration experience.
The blended learning delivery model allows students the opportunity to explore Power Engineering pathways along with other trades regardless of their geographical location. Each course consists of 50-60 hours of online theory and 50 hours work-study at a SaskPower plant and mobile steam lab.
Through this course, students can link their classroom learning with a future workplace, they can connect with industry and prospective employers, build employability skills, and learn about power engineering along with other trades such as millwrights, welders, chemical technologists and instrumentation technicians. The credit earned is transferable to possible further study in the power engineering field.
Power engineers can be employed in any industry where boilers are used, such as in gas plants, power generating plants, heavy oil plants, refineries, hospitals, hotels and other institutions, with five levels of provincial certification for power engineers.
South East Cornerstone Public School Division, in partnership with Prairie South Schools and SaskPower, will continue to offer this opportunity to Grade 11 and 12 students in Southeast Cornerstone.
