The Centennial Committee delivered its report at the October 8 City Council meeting. Arrangements continue to be on track, as the venue is booked, the catering is being arranged and the party supplies are being ordered for the January 1, 2013 launch of Weyburn's year of celebration.
Following the new protocols, Weyburn's water treatment plant submitted its monthly report to City Council. Through careful monitoring and upgraded equipment, the city's water remains at 100% compliance with provincial Ministry of the Environment requirements.
Weyburn may be far from the Second World War in time and geography, but in spirit we are much closer than one might think. On February 22, 1943, the Canadian warship HMCS Weyburn was sunk by mines off the coast of Gibraltar. Twelve Canadian sailors, including the captain, lost their lives. The Friends of the Navy, a non-profit volunteer organization that supports naval causes in Saskatchewan, is fundraising to erect a monument in Regina to commemorate all ships with a Saskatchewan connection that were lost in World War II. City Council agreed to the organization's request for a $250 donation to the monument.
