Crocus 80 Theatre is casting for a powerful, emotional play called "Collateral Bodies", which will be their competition piece for TheatreOne.

"This production is unlike any production that Crocus 80 Theatre has produced in the last two years," said Connie Nightingale, vice-president of Crocus 80. "It will give our actors the opportunity to explore new theatrical emotions and experience emotional growth as an actor."

"Collateral Bodies" explores the human rights violations that happen specifically to women, also known as femicide. It is a one-act drama that was written by Erin Rachel Kaplan.

There are seven characters in the play that are all female roles. To complete casting for the play, Crocus 80 is seeking a lyrical dancer to perform as "the Woman in White", who brings the other six cast to life so that they can share their experiences.

The other six cast are Hope, Rajeey, Omid, Esperanza, Nadiya and Asha, women from six specific cultures: American, Mexican, Indian, Iranian, Somali and Eastern European - whose lives were ended in various ways simply for being female.

It is very important to Crocus 80 Theatre to accurately represent these six cultures. They are seeking an ethnic-diverse cast to complete casting, but are also seeking guidance from cultural leaders in the city to ensure proper representation of each of the six females and their culture.

Throughout "Collateral Bodies", the experiences the female cast relate are experiences that are currently being lived by many in places all over our world: sex-trafficking, rape, female circumcision, bride burning, domestic violence and incarceration.

The stories told here are fictional yet based in truth from research, interviews, documentaries and historical texts.

The goal of this piece is to enlighten spectators about the state of women in the "modern" world and give an impetus for action against the atrocities presented in the play, so that the next generation of women have a better chance at life.

These women in "Collateral Bodies" are motivators, meant to empower others to stand up, act, make their voices heard.

In addition to seeking cast members, Crocus 80 Theatre requires a mature person as their light and sound technician.

There will be a casting call on Monday, June 3 at 7 p.m., in the Tommy Douglas Performing Arts Centre. Anyone interested in auditioning for a role, or supporting the play with guidance, is encouraged to attend this casting call.

TheatreOne is the one-act festival hosted annually by Theatre Saskatchewan. This year it will be hosted by Regina Little Theatre at the Regina Performing Arts Centre from October 31 to November 2.
