October 20, 2014 marked the 110th birthday of public health care founder, Tommy Douglas. Weyburn CUPE Office 5999 celebrated the birthday of this iconic individual with its first ever honorary birthday party that included balloons, decorations and cupcakes.
The birthday celebration is part of a nationally run campaign "Save our Health Care". The campaign aims to bring awareness about the fragility of our public health care system. According to the program statistics, federal Conservatives are on track to cutting $36 billion from health care funding which would see Saskatchewan at risk to lose $1.1 billion over the next ten years. Sandra Seitz, president of the local CUPE office, handed out buttons and pamphlets that contain information regarding the alarming statistics. When asked what the driving force behind both the honorary birthday celebration and awareness campaign Seitz responded "We want to keep Tommy's dream alive."
Residents are encouraged to become proactive by picking up a pamphlet at the local office located at 46 -3rd Street or visit the website at saveourhealthcare.ca for more information.
