The employees of CUPE Local 90 ratified a new collective agreement with the City of Weyburn, with the union members voting 90 per cent in favour of the new contract.

The ratified agreement contains no concessions, with wage increases of one per cent for the first year, and 1.5 per cent in each of the following years of the new four-year contract.

CUPE ratified the collective agreement on Oct. 16, and Weyburn city council voted in favour of the agreement on Monday evening.

“We are pleased to have reached a final agreement that is fair and reasonable for both our employees and our taxpayers in the City of Weyburn,” said city manager Mathew Warren.

All employees currently employed will receive the pay increase retroactively to Jan. 1, 2017.

“The union was adamant throughout the bargaining that they would not accept concessions, and we did not back down on that,” said Sherri Blackburn, president of CUPE Local 90.

“The City of Weyburn is an excellent place to live and we value the outstanding work our employees contribute to the success of our community,” said Warren.

The union president said they are “pleased to be finished this long round of negotiations, and we are looking forward to rebuilding the relationship with the employer.”
