MOSSBANK - The Town of Mossbank is trying to entice people to make the centre their new home. To that end, the community of 371 located approximately 40 minutes south of Moose Jaw expanded with continuing work on the Centennial Drive development.
“We think this is the best place in Canada to raise a family,” said the town’s CAO Chris Costley. “It’s safe and affordable.”
Back in the 1970s, Centennial Drive was created with the intent on completing the loop and connecting Second Street E. Costley estimates the new space will allow for approximately 60 people to join the community in those 23 new lots.
“We have the water and sewer all done, we’re just waiting on power and gas and then we’re ready to start building houses,” said Costley.
To further sweeten the pot, Mossbank is offering a deal on the purchase price - $25,000 per lot until the end of the year. Come Jan. 1, the per lot price will increase to $33,000.
“There’s a building incentive, too,” added Mossbank’s assistant administrator Christa Fortin. “Three years tax-free after you move in.”
Both Costley and Fortin listed points of pride in the community, such as the Bent Nail Cafe, the newly-completed walking path, the pristine water sourced from a natural aquifer, and facilities that many communities simply do not have. While trying to attract people into small town Saskatchewan is not a new issue, Costley and Fortin believe Mossbank possesses a welcoming and inclusive atmosphere for young families. This sentiment is echoed in the town slogan, "Life is better in Mossbank."
“We think we have a lot of reasons for people to want to be here, it’s just getting the word out,” said Costley. He also noted the town is getting younger as the median age has decreased by a decade over the last two census counts, currently sitting at 41 years of age.
“We understand that attracting families is the only way we will survive, so that’s been our focus,” Costley said. “Whoever would like to come live here, we’re happy to have them.”
