The Estevan Family Resource Centre is looking for some community support, and has a toe-tapping event planned for later this month, to garner that support. For its yearly fundraising event, the family centre will hold a cabaret at the Wylie Mitchell building on April 16, featuring the sounds of Regina cover band Rock Candy.
“The family centre gives free programming. We offer early learning programs here, there’s a drop-in centre, we do crisis counselling and all of those services are free to anyone,” said director Colleen Macmillan. “We are able to offer those services because of our fundraisers, so it’s important for us to have these fundraisers — to be able to offer these services for everyone.”
Macmillan said the entertainment will be something everyone can enjoy. Rock Candy specializes in playing a number of genres of music, but Macmillan noted the band’s specialty is its many cover performances of classic songs that are sure to be crowd-favourites, songs that will inevitably have people up and dancing throughout the night.
“It’s good entertainment. They do the latest top 40, but they’ll also go back and do stuff in the ‘70s. They do a lot of covers. It’s good dance music,” said Macmillan. “We felt this band will definitely cater to a larger age crowd, from 19-year olds to your 50-plus crowd. I think everyone in that age range will enjoy it.”
Macmillan said the family centre picked Rock Candy to keep things new and fresh from the entertainment of previous years
“The band we had last year was amazing and we would have gotten them back in a minute, but we want to make sure that every year, we change it up,” said Macmillan.
Funds raised will go directly toward helping keep the services of the family centre free and available for everyone who needs them. The family centre is a busy service in the Estevan community.
Macmillan said the drop-in centre and play area had just over 13,000 visits in the past year. The family centre’s programs all regularly run at capacity, and the summer programs for students had 420 children enrolled in them, this past summer. The family’s crisis counselling service received 300 calls over the course of the past year.
“We have such a large array of programs,” said Macmillan.“The numbers are all quite high.’
Doors open for the 19+ cabaret at 8:30 p.m. and the band plays from 9 p.m. to 1 a.m. For more details, contact the Estevan Family Resource Centre.
