A new report released on November 8 by Canada Mortgage and Housing Corporation shows urban housing starts are up by 33.4 per cent in the first ten months of 2012 as compared to the same period in 2011, the highest percentage increase in Canada. There were 6,356 units started over this time period in 2012 compared to 4,766 last year.
"A growing economy and a growing population has created a growing home construction sector this year," Economy Minister Bill Boyd said.
In Regina, housing starts are up by 76.3 per cent in the first ten months of 2012. Saskatoon's housing starts were up by 19.4 per cent. In total across the province, single-detached units increased by 29.7 per cent while multiple units jumped by 37.4 per cent.
"This shows that our economy is moving forward and that consumers are feeling confident enough to invest in new homes," Boyd said. "That confidence contributes to our economic progress as a province and helps us achieve a better standard of living for Saskatchewan families."
