Four of the six candidates vying to win the federal seat of Souris-Moose Mountain took part in the Weyburn Chamber of Commerce’s candidates forum on Wednesday evening at the Weyburn Legion Hall.
The candidates who attended were Phillip Zajac, People’s Party of Canada; Travis Patron, Canadian Nationalist Party; Dr. Robert Kitchen, Conservative Party; and Ashlee Hicks, NDP.
The Green Party candidate, Judy Mergel, was unable to attend Weyburn’s forum, but she did make the forum held on Thursday evening in Estevan. The Liberal candidate, Javin Ames-Sinclair, did not respond to the Chamber’s invitation to attend the forum.
The Chamber members posed seven questions to the candidates, asked by moderator Reed Anderson, and then the microphone was open to questions from the public.
The questions from the chamber ranged from their positions on the Trans-Mountain Pipeline, international trade and immigration.
From the public, questions included how they would retain the freedom of speech in Canada, whether corporate taxes would be included in a review of the tax system, what their position was on allowing jihadists back into Canada if they left to go fight for ISIS overseas, and what their position was on the war on natural resources in Canada.
Election day is on Monday, Oct. 21, and advance polls will be held from Oct. 11-14 at McKenna Hall in Weyburn. The hours for voting in the advance polls will be from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. each day, and on election day, voting will be from 7:30 a.m. to 7:30 p.m.
Voters can also visit any Elections Canada office to cast a ballot any time before 6 p.m. on Oct. 15. Election Canada’s main office for Souris-Moose Mountain is at the City Centre Mall, with additional offices in Estevan and Whitewood.
