The Weyburn Rotary Club has put the final plans in place for their first-ever Golf Ball Drop fundraiser, an event set to raise funds for the club and for the STARS Air Ambulance service.
The event is set for Sunday, Sept. 14, and includes the Golf Ball Drop, a golf tournament, a 50-50 putting contest, and a barbecue hosted by the Weyburn Golf Course.
Tickets for the Golf Ball Drop are still for sale at $5 each, and club members will have tables at various locations right up until the day before the event; each ticket is numbered, which will correspond with a number on the golf ball, with a maximum of 6,000 golf balls to be numbered for this first event.
STARS will have representatives on hand, along with a tent and some equipment on display, and will be taking part in the golf tournament as well.
The balls will be put into a cement bucket and raised by a crane supplied by Jerry Mainil Ltd., at a height of 65 feet over a target; the balls will be dropped onto the target, and the closest three to the target will win a cash prize. First place wins $5,000, second place wins $3,000 and third place gets $1,000.
Fundraiser organizers Denis Tremblay and Darrell Yakimowski went to a test drop where they released 2,200 balls, and it worked perfectly.
Tremblay said the balls have all been marked now and are in pails of 200, so once the ticket books are back, they can take out the numbers which haven't been sold.
The putting contest will run from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m., and will cost $5 for three balls; the payout will be on a 50-50 basis.
The golf tournament will start at 11 a.m., and the cost is $85 a golfer, with registrations taken at the golf clubhouse. The barbecue will cost $12 a person, and will run from 4 to 6 p.m., and the ball drop will occur at 5 p.m.
