Improvements to be made to North Portal Border Crossing

"There were three significant announcements today regarding infrastructure funding for border crossings in Canada and North Portal was one of them," said MP for Souris-Moose Mountain, Ed Komarnicki on April 2.

"There were three significant announcements today regarding infrastructure funding for border crossings in Canada and North Portal was one of them," said MP for Souris-Moose Mountain, Ed Komarnicki on April 2.

This announcement highlights commitments made under the Beyond the Border Action Plan, the Economic Action Plan 2013, and the new Building Canada Plan.

The reference in the budget and the announcement made on behalf of the Minister of Transport is not only good news for Souris-Moose Mountain but the province of Saskatchewan and indeed all of Canada. Although construction may not commence until 2014-2015 the upfront preparatory work can start now.

Border efficiency promotes both trade and travel. The amount committed to North Portal is ten million dollars, which is a fairly substantial amount.

North Portal is a critical commercial border crossing for Canada - US trade, with over seven billion dollars in two-way trade in 2012. It is also an important border crossing for travelers, with over 92,000 passenger vehicles passing through this port in 2012. Improvements to border facilities will help to reduce border delays and help facilitate trade. This will create jobs, economic growth, and long term prosperity.

"Ensuring modern and efficient infrastructure at North Portal, Canada's ninth busiest crossing between Canada and the United States that operates 24 hours a day, 7 days a week will provide the foundation for a strong, productive economy and I am sure will be appreciated by everyone using the Port," said Komarnicki.
