A GoFundMe page has been established for a Weyburn family, Kevin and Crystal Cornish, facing medical issues for their young son Nolan.
Their youngest son was born on May 17 at 33 weeks, and as he came prematurely he spent 58 days in the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU), where Nolan was diagnosed with Trisomy 21 (Down’s syndrome), holes in his heart and laryngomalacia.
He required respiratory assistance and a feeding tube. Since he was discharged from NICU on July 14, he has been seen by a number of doctors and medical professionals as they have sought to keep him healthy. He has had to be admitted to hospital five times since his discharge, as he is prone to upper respiratory problems.
He has been in hospital for 100 days of his short life so far, and currently they are waiting to be sent to Saskatoon to see a respirologist and cardiologist, as his need for oxygen has increased, and it is uncertain if heart surgery may be required.
The Cornish family has had to make frequent trips back and forth to Regina, taking time away from work and trying to balance the needs of the family with Nolan’s older brother Nathan.
Kevin’s sister Karla Cornish-Erickson, who set up the GoFundMe page to help out with the expenses of caring for Nolan, said the couple is “very thankful for so much support from family and friends that God has surrounded them with. They are learning that each day is a gift, and are glad they don’t walk alone through the unknown and difficult times.”
The fundraiser is to assist Kevin and Crystal with the medical expenses, fuel costs, food while staying at the hospital, taking time off work and other expenses that may arise in the days ahead. As of Monday, the page had raised about $7,015 towards the goal of $8,000.
