When hearing about the 100th anniversary of the Calgary Stampede you don't often here about the Best in Show contests. The events most discussed are the controversial chuck wagon races and exciting barrel racing.
Well wouldn't you know it, Carlyle's very own cattle were winning several first place ribbons in the Holstein Dairy Classic Championship Show back in March as part of the 100th year of the Stampede.
The cattle from Lampada Holsteins compete under the Carlyle name, but originate from Lampman dairy farm, Fornwald, Fred and Sons. All of these cows ranked exceptionally high among their competitiors. Fornwald, Fred and Sons was established in 1952 and have owned a dairy farm ever since.
Tequila Bobby Jane, a senior heifer calf placed first in a class 2 jersey cow competition as well as third in the junior champion contest. Minister Candace, placed third against some tough Albertan competition in the class 5 intermediate yearling heifer division of Jersey cows. Lampada Holsteins took home another gold finish ribbon with Action Camaro in the senior yearling class, second place came to Sultan Fergi as she competed against other three year old females, the one and only Senior Betty Jo won the five year old division and grand champion position.
Although the prize winners are back home they were still feeling like quite the stars as they watched the remainder of the competitions of the Stampede.
High school aged competitions were held for steer riding and included 13-year-old Brady Resch of Coronach. Brady came in 6th place during the long go of the boys steer riding competition, allowing him to compete in the finals. Along with two others in the six competing, he was then bucked off. Brady is the grandson of Tom and Colleen Farnden of Carlyle.
During the Stampede rodeo, Kenosee Lake's very own Dusty Ephrom competed, and although the bull rider didn't place this year, he did some magnificent riding including a ride scored at 82.00 points on July 11.
The only other Saskatchewan native participating in this year's rodeo was another bull rider by the name of Aaron Roy, from Yellow Grass who was placing high amongst all the events he participated in. He rode his highest scoring marked ride on July 8 during performance 3, which helped him gain 2nd place overall in the A pool, winning himself 13,500 dollars. He was also this year's Manor Rodeo winner.
Overall for a province with low presence in the Stampede this year, they sure did make Saskatchewan look good!
