Friends of Abbie Speir will be holding "Abbie's Day" by sharing her sense of fun and love of family with a memorial fundraiser in support of her children, on Saturday, June 10, organized by the Yellow Grass Community Club and Yellow Grass Minor Ball.
A full day of activities has been planned, and all proceeds raised from the day will be donated to the trust fund set up for Abbie’s children. There will be a slow-pitch tournament, a park memorial and a supper and cabaret.
The ball tournament is full up with 10 teams, and will be held at the Yellow Grass ball diamonds with games getting underway at 9 a.m. There will be a beer gardens, canteen and children’s activities at the diamonds, including face-painting and a bike rodeo.
“It’s going to be a big family day for the whole day,” said organizer Jen Wilkinson. “She was a very fun-loving spirit and loved life, and we’re trying to capture that with the day of family activities.”
She noted that Abbie was a member of the Community Club, and was going to coach in minor ball this year, and this day was originally going to be a fundraiser for Minor Ball. Now, the day will be all about her, said Wilkinson.
A tree will be planted in Abbie’s memory in Allen Park with her family present, located on Souris Street, at 3 p.m.
“Anyone who would like to say anything about Abbie is welcome to speak at the tree-planting,” said Wilkinson, noting there will be a bench installed by the tree, painted purple, which was Abbie’s favourite colour.
The supper and cabaret will be held at the Yellow Grass Communiplex, with cocktails at 5 p.m., the supper at 6 p.m. and the cabaret will follow.
There will be a cash bar, and a silent auction of Abbie’s favourite things will be held. In addition, there will be donation boxes for the trust fund for Abbie’s children set up.
Some of Abbie’s favourite things include makeup, anything purple and animal prints, said Wilkinson, adding that organizers are still accepting items for the silent auction.
Organizers are also looking for more volunteers to help out during the day, and can contact Wilkinson if they are interesting in lending a hand.
The sale of tickets has been going well so far, said Wilkinson, noting she sold some 30 or 40 tickets the first day they went on sale. Tickets for the evening cost $25 for adults, and $10 for children aged six to nine, while those five and under are free. Tickets are available at Hoff Insurance, or by contacting Wilkinson at 306-861-8021.
A Facebook page has been created for the day under the Yellow Grass Community Club’s Facebook page, called “Abbie’s Day”, and updates about the day and schedule of ball games will be posted there.
Donations can also be made at TCU Financial in Saskatoon or Regina to “Abbie’s Family Trust”, or online by e-transfer to [email protected].
