Ministry removes drinking water advisory for Weyburn

The Weyburn Utility Board, the Hamlet of North Weyburn, the Village of McTaggart and Nickle Lake Regional Park are still on a PDWA

Weyburn Mayor Debra Button confirmed today that the provincial Ministry of Environment has lifted the Precautionary Drinking Water Advisory for the City of Weyburn.

"I first of all want to thank all of the residents of the city for their patience and cooperation through this difficult period. Our community spirit, more than anything else, allowed us to make it through this problem," Button said.

"There have been numerous people, from the City, the health region, and the Ministry of Environment, dedicated to working together to develop and execute a plan to lift the advisory as quickly as possible while following the precautions set of by the Ministry of Environment to ensure the health and safety of all those who use the water system," stated Rene Richard, Director of Engineering. "I want to especially thank our own water treatment staff who worked extremely hard under very challenging conditions."

"Since the first of March the tests that have been performed on the drinking water have been clear which shows that our treatment facility has been producing water in compliance with environment regulations since that time", said City Manager Smith.

Public Health Officer Grant Paulson advised there have been no cases of illness due to giardia or cryptosporidium reported in the Sun Country Health Region since the issuance of the advisory.

There will be many opportunities to take the improvements we've achieved at the water treatment plant and continue to add to them as we enhance the performance of the plant to accommodate future growth. We are already looking into adding data control systems as well as a new reservoir in the very near future.

"I can't thank the public enough," reiterated Mayor Button, "and we will continue to strive to provide quality services to our public today and into the future.

Flushing and cleaning steps are recommended by all users of the City of Weyburn water system now that the precautionary drinking water advisory is lifted.

These steps are to ensure that drinking water services and home plumbing are adequately flushed. If these steps are not completed, unsafe water may remain in plumbing systems.

For a detailed document on flushing and cleaning steps, residents can visit the City of Weyburn website at www.weyburn.ca. Documents will also be mailed out by the city.
Please read the instructions carefully. Then follow the instructions for each item. The instructions in this document are routine in nature and in most cases can be found in the owner's manuals provided with softeners and other equipment.

Additional steps are required for properties that are not single-family homes (e.g.: apartment/condo buildings with shared water service).

Individuals only have to complete those steps that are applicable to their plumbing system.

All users served by the Weyburn waterworks need to complete the following:
Step 1: Flush the water plumbing system in your building or home.
Step 2: Ensure that the water softeners, water filters and other water treatment or conditioning equipment are safe to use.
Step 3: Flush and clean other water using appliances.
Step 4: Discard potentially contaminated food and water.
Notes: When in doubt about the instructions, consider asking a friend, neighbour, or relative for assistance, contact the manufacturer of the appliance or device, or seek the services of a trained professional.

Always follow equipment manufacturers flushing and disinfection instructions if available.

Please note - all other customers supplied by the City of Weyburn including the Weyburn Utility Board, the Hamlet of North Weyburn, the Village of McTaggart and Nickle Lake Regional Park are still on a PDWA until required remediation is completed.
