Every four years, emergency services are tested through staged accidents. The Weyburn Airport Emergency plan was carried out Tuesday with Weyburn EMS, the fire department, city police and RCMP involved.
"These mock emergencies are needed to practice the emergency plan and to ensure that the various public services involved in the plan operate seamlessly," said Weyburn Fire Chief Steve Debienne.
The four emergency response agencies responded to a scene involving one truck and a "Cessna Aircraft." The driver of the vehicle was impaired, there were four victims sustaining different injuries as well as one deceased. The victims were played by community residents.
"The scene was secured very quickly and the patients were tagged accordingly," said Debienne. "Hats off to all staff involved."
At the conclusion of the mock emergency, all parties involved met for a debriefing and addressed any changes to ensure all emergency services responded appropriately and efficiently.
From the debriefing, it was concluded that communication between emergency services needs to be addressed to ensure public safety.
Debienne explained when all four emergency response agencies attend the same scene, it's difficult for them to talk to each other.
"I would like to thank all of our emergency services personnel for their hard work and diligence in making sure our community is safe. I would also like to thank the residents of the city for their cooperation during these exercises," said Mayor Debra Button.
