The MS Society of Canada, Saskatchewan Division officially kicked off the Saskatchewan Blue Cross MS Walk in Weyburn on May 29.
While participants still have until June 13 to collect donations and submit their pledges, the amount raised as of June 1 is $18,000.
The MS Society acknowledges all the participants, volunteers, sponsors and donors. Mal Barber and the Weyburn Rotary helped run the event.
The money raised will be invested in world-leading Canadian MS research, government advocacy, financial support and programs and services for individuals affected by multiple sclerosis.
Canada has the highest rate of MS in the world and it’s the most common neurological disease affecting young adults aged 15 to 40 in Saskatchewan.
“MS is prevalent here. It affects three times as many women than men and it’s important to educate our community about the disease and ways that they can get involved,” said Colleen Hennan, communication relations coordinator for the MS Saskatchewan Division. “The MS Society is here to ensure that no one faces MS alone, and it is fundraising like the MS Walk that help us do that.”
Eleven communities hosted Saskatchewan Blue Cross MS Walks during the month of May.
