Multiple car fires in Oxbow and Alameda overnight between May 17 and 18 have the Carnduff RCMP detachment looking for a culprit.
A report first came in at around 4 a.m. directing authorities to investigate two vehicles on fire behind the former Oxbow high school. The fires were extinguished, and it was determined the scorched 2003 Pontiac Grand AM had been stolen from Alameda. The second vehicle, a 2003 GMC Envoy was taken from a residence in Oxbow.
The RCMP were still on scene at the fire in Oxbow when they were called to another vehicle that was set ablaze by the elementary school in Alameda. That call was around 4:30 a.m. This vehicle was a 2009 Ford F-350 Super Duty, which Constable Luke Kaley of the Carnduff RCMP noted was stolen from a business site in Oxbow.
Kaley said they've seen cars stolen and then dumped in fields before, but having three cars set on fire in one night is something new.
"It's kind of out of the ordinary," he added.
The vehicles were all stolen late on May 17 or early May 18.
There was also a break and enter that same night at the Alameda Elementary School, with the culprits leaving minimal damage done inside. An undisclosed amount of cash was also taken.
Kaley said it's assumed all incidents are related. The RCMP is continuing to investigate the matters.
