The inaugural meeting of the Weyburn Newcomer Advocacy Committee (WNAC) was held on January 23 at the Weyburn Public Library.
Co-founded by Terry Jordens and Kam Teo - WNAC (pronounced Win - Ak) is an advocacy committee created out of an identified need resulting from tremendous economic growth in Weyburn in recent years.
Statistics Canada states that Weyburn has grown by 11 percent in the past four years, with many being newcomers and new immigrants. There have, however, been some challenges due to population growth in the City of Weyburn.
WNAC aims to work with stakeholders and individuals throughout the community to support the needs of newcomers and new immigrants. This will be achieved in part by promoting the benefits of immigration and cultural diversity in the community, as well as by advocating and sustaining relationships between cultural groups. It will also assist newcomer integration through communication, education, and cultural awareness.
A variety of topics were discussed at the first meeting of WNAC ranging from multiculturalism, instruction of English as an Additional Language (EAL), to cost of living challenges for newcomers and new immigrants.
Those in the community that wish more information about WNAC or to be a part of this dynamic committee can contact Terry Jordens at [email protected] or Kam Teo at [email protected] or 848-3951.
