Police apprehend impaired driver and others during a busy week

The Estevan Police Service (EPS) charged one person for impaired driving and several people for breaching their release conditions during the final days of April.

EPS members are looking into a mischief incident that occurred between April 22 and 24, and was reported during the April 25 day shift. People may have been partying in a vacant residence when the mischief occurred.

Officers responded to a male who was believed to be in medical distress during the day shift. He was found to be in good health.

Police received a call about a possible impaired driver during the April 25 night shift, and obtained a description of the suspect vehicle. The vehicle was located a short time later and an 18-year-old Estevan man was checked for sobriety. He failed a roadside screening test, and was arrested and charged with impaired driving. He was released with a court date in June.

Members also received a call about a break-and-enter at a building in Estevan’s core. Investigation showed that a glass door was broken and entry was gained. The matter is currently under investigation.

Police responded to a complaint of youths trespassing in a yard during the April 26 day shift. The EPS reminds the public to notify the police of any unusual or suspicious activity in their neighborhood.

Members are also investigating a report of criminal harassment involving several young people.

Police were called to the city’s east side during the April 26 night shift, due to a report of a suspicious person in the area. Police were unable to locate anyone.

Officers assisted a landlord during the April 27 day shift with a request to keep the peace while dealing with a troublesome tenant.

Police also investigated a theft of recyclables. An officer located the individual responsible, and the items were returned.

Members were called to a parking complaint in the Pleasantdale area. The registered owner was warned about the bylaw.

Police received a report of a theft from a local gas bar. The individual responsible has been identified, and the matter is still under investigation.

Officers responded to a theft at the Leisure Centre during the April 27 night shift. Items were located a short time later. The matter is being investigated as a mischief incident.

Members assisted a driver, who had just crossed the border into Canada, but was lost and confused once arriving in the country.

Officers are investigating a complaint of criminal harassment involving several young people.

Police were called to a single-vehicle collision at the corner of Sixth Street and 13th Avenue during the April 28 day shift that involved a semi-truck. The driver hit a light standard and damaged traffic lights. He was charged with driving without due care and attention and not using the bypass. City crews were at the scene to get the lights at the intersection repaired. A four-way stop was in place until the lights were restored.

Members responded to a complaint of an unsecured residence during the April 28 night shift. A search of the residence and the yard revealed nothing unusual.

Officers then responded to a call of a suspicious vehicle with the horn and four-way flashers going off. A 30-year-old woman was transported to a friend’s house for the night.

EPS members participated in the street hockey game that took place on Sillers Street during the afternoon and evening of April 28.

Police were called about a patron who was in a drinking establishment during the April 29 night shift, but was not supposed to be there. Police attended and the male subject then fled on foot. Police know the subject in question and charges are pending.

Members were alerted to a suspicious person in the downtown area. A search of the area did not turn up any individuals.

Police arrested an Estevan male on an outstanding warrant for a driving offence during the April 30 day shift. He was also arrested for theft and charged accordingly. He was released a short time later.

Another Estevan male was arrested for breaching court-ordered conditions after he was found in possession of alcohol. He was released a short time later with a new court date.

An Estevan male is facing several charges following a traffic stop. Augustine Thomas of Estevan was arrested at the intersection of 13th Avenue and Fourth Street. He is a prohibited driver and was found operating a motor vehicle at that location. Thomas was charged accordingly, and was also charged with breaching two release conditions, and obstructing a police officer, stemming from an incident on April 23 in which he provided a false name. He was remanded for a court appearance on May 2.

A noisy party was reported during the April 30 night shift. The homeowner was warned under the noise bylaw.

Police received a report of mischief involving a vehicle. Statements from the involved parties were obtained. The matter remains under investigation.

A fight that broke out in the city resulting in a male being taken to hospital and treated. The involved persons were identified and statements will be obtained. This matter is also under investigation.

A 911 call was received from a local business. Members attended and one male was arrested. He will be facing charges for theft under $5,000 and resisting arrest. The male was lodged in cells to be released in front of the justice of the peace.

Police stopped a vehicle just after 6:00 a.m. on May 1 for excessive speed. They learned the driver had been consuming alcohol the previous night. Although several hours had passed since her last drink, a roadside test revealed her blood alcohol to be at a level that required a temporary suspension. As a result, her driver's license was suspended and her vehicle seized for several days.

An online fraud was reported to the police. The victim was scammed into sending money to an unknown person online.
