Police kept busy in late February

Estevan Police Service (EPS) members arrested one person for drug charges, charged several people for distracted driving and handled other calls during the final days of February. 

Officers responded to a call through the Report Impaired Drivers (RID) line from the downtown area during the Feb. 23 night shift. The vehicle could not be located.

Members also charged a homeowner with a noise bylaw offence, after police received a complaint about a loud stereo in northeast Estevan. 

Officers then responded to a complaint of suspicious vehicles in Lynn Prime Park. One of the vehicles was located and the matter remains under investigation.

Police responded to a panic alarm at a local business during the Feb. 24 day shift. Upon arrival, it was determined that the alarm button was accidentally pressed and no emergency had occurred.

Members conducted a small traffic blitz at a couple of locations in the city. The primary offences that members dealt with were related to speeding and intersection infractions. 

Police are investigating a driving complaint on Souris Avenue North near Smith Street.  It remains under investigation. 

Police received an assistance call from the Shand Power Station Access Road during the Feb. 24 night shift. A deer was struck by a vehicle and had to be removed from the road. The RCMP and the Ministry of Environment were attending to other matters and could not respond. 

Members received a call through RID early in the evening. The driver could not be located. 

Police stopped a vehicle in the 1200-block of Nicholson Road. The driver, a 37-year-old man, gave a false name to police. He was later identified and arrested for obstruction of justice. He was also found to be in possession of a small amount of meth and cocaine, one full syringe and two used ones, even though he had stated he did not have syringes on him. It put members at risk of being punctured with syringes. The man has been charged with obstruction of justice, possession of meth and possession of cocaine. He was lodged in cells, to be taken to court in the morning of Feb. 25.

Members of the Combined Traffic Service of Saskatchewan and the EPS conducted a distracted driving blitz in the city during the Feb. 25 day shift. A number of people were charged. 

Police arrested and charged an 18-year-old female for contempt of court for failing to appear at a trial in which she had been served a subpoena. 

Officers attended a couple of unrelated residential alarms that were found to be false.

Police were called to a liquor establishment during the Feb. 25 night shift, for a report of a fight outside. Members attended to locate a man claiming he was assaulted. The matter is still under investigation to determine what happened. Police waited until the participants were no longer intoxicated prior to interviewing
them.

Several driving complaints were received from around the city during the Feb. 26 day shift. Tickets were written for various offenses under the Traffic Safety Act.

Police also received two fraud complaints. The EPS reminds people not to give out personal or banking information online or over the phone.

Two complaints for uttering threats and criminal harassment were received. Further investigation is happening on these files.

Several alarm calls were received throughout the day. They all proved to be false.

Police were called to a northeast hotel during the Feb. 26 night shift, for a report of an intoxicated person walking around the hallways who was not a registered guest. Police located a 35-year-old Estevan man, who was found to be on conditions of a probation order not to possess or consume alcohol. He was arrested, lodged in cells and charged accordingly. 

Members received a couple noise complaints from a south end residence. They were asked to be quiet, and no further action was necessary. 

Police were then called to a north Estevan residence to check on a young person who is supposed to abide by a curfew. He was located at home as per his conditions and no further action was needed.

Officers were called to a parking complaint from a north Estevan parking lot. The driver was advised of the concerns from the public

Police attended to a residence on the north side of the tracks to conduct a conditions check on a woman who rents the residence. A small amount of cocaine was located. She was arrested and charged accordingly and released with a court date in March.

Members received a call about a motorist who had passed out while in the drive thru at a local restaurant. He was located, checked and had no alcohol in his system. He was sent on his way.

Police were notified of a complaint for mischief to a vehicle during the Feb. 27 day shift. Police were told that a vehicle in the downtown area suffered some damage because a foreign substance was placed in the gas tank. Police are looking into the incident and the matter is under investigation. 

Police also took a report of a hit-and-run that occurred at the No Frills or Walmart parking lot sometime that afternoon. 

Also, due to the nice weather, it was noted that several motorcycles were being operated around the city. Police remind the public to watch out for motorcycles on the road. 

Police were asked by another agency during the Feb. 27 night shift to help with locating a 16-year-old male from another jurisdiction. The young man was located in Estevan and was reunited with his family.

Officers conducted several traffic stops throughout the night to check for impaired drivers. None were located. 

Police arrested a 20-year-old Oxbow man for breaching the conditions of his release. He has several outstanding charges before the courts, and appeared in court on Feb. 29. 

Members received several calls about an all-terrain vehicle (ATV) that was being operated in city limits. Police remind the public that it is illegal to operate an ATV in city limits.
