Public assistance with reporting impaired drivers is proving successful

Report from the Weyburn Police Service for the week of October 7 to 14:

During the reporting period, the Weyburn Police Service attended to 91 calls for service. Police assistance was required at a number of motor vehicle accidents throughout the city. Weyburn Police Service members also attended to several alarm calls, which were generated from both residential and business properties. There were a number of complaints of mischief done to parked vehicles. These acts are under investigation. *As a result of the RID (report impaired drivers) program, police receive and respond to more and more alcohol related driving complaints. The program continues to be successful and, as a result of those reports, a number of impaired drivers have been taken off the street. We appreciate the positive action from the public in helping to keep our highways safe.

*On October 12, police responded to a report of an intoxicated driver leaving a local liquor establishment. The vehicle was located and stopped and investigation revealed that the intoxicated individual was the passenger and had secured a sober driver. No further action was required.

*Police received another report of a possible intoxicated driver. The driver of that vehicle was located but was not found to be impaired. However, open liquor was found in the vehicle. As a result, a male youth who was a passenger in the vehicle, was charged with being a minor in possession of alcohol.

*Police attended the Tags Youth Center to speak with two male youths who had been asked to leave the property and continued to hang around outside. Police warned them of their actions and the boys left the area.

*On October 9, a man presented himself at the Weyburn Police Service as the victim of an assault. The matter is being investigated, with possible charges resulting.

*On October 7, an adult male was lodged in cells at WPS and charged with refusal to provide a breath sample to an officer. The 21-year-old male is scheduled to appear in court in November.

*A patrolling officer encountered a male youth passed out and very intoxicated. Emergency Medical Services attended to the youth, who later woke up and was taken home, where he was turned over to a responsible adult.

*Police responded to a report a loud party complaint. The investigation revealed that the noise was loud and disturbing in a residential area. As a result, the person responsible for the property was charged under the City of Weyburn noise bylaw.

*A staff member from a local hotel contacted the police to report property stolen from one of the hotel rooms. The matter is still under investigation.
