Queen Elizabeth students create Christmas Cards for seniors, veterans

Over 140 custom Christmas cards were designed by the students at Queen Elizabeth School, and delivered to veterans and seniors in the community. The project was a collaboration between the School Community Council, the teachers and students at Queen Elizabeth.

“We wanted to think of a way to involve the students to still be connected with the community, even with the current COVID-19 restrictions,” said Jennifer Cugnet, member of large for the QE SCC.

“We left it up to the teachers to decide if they had time in their schedules, for the students in their classes to make the Christmas cards.” In total there were 85 cards made for seniors delivered to the Weyburn Special Care Home for distribution, and 59 cards for veterans delivered to the Weyburn Legion.

“Hopefully these cards put a smile their faces, just for a moment. So that they are being thought of and the community cares for them. The students at QE have very big hearts,” said Jennifer.

Josephine Cugnet, her brother Thomas and cousin Isabelle made the deliveries to the Weyburn Special Care Home and Weyburn Legion. “It was a lot of fun. We got to be Santa and his elves,” said Josephine.

“I really liked how my teacher had a lot of different craft items for the cards, and how there was different colours of paper available to be used,” added Josephine.

Jennifer Cugnet noted that each child wrote something different on the handmade Christmas cards. “They would all sign it with ‘From Your Friend’, or ‘You Have a Friend in Me’. It was just very kind messages that were written.”

One of the first ideas of the School Community Council was to start a pen pal project for the students, where they could write to seniors and veterans in the community. “We thought it might be a little tricky, especially since we wanted to avoid any back-and-forth contact right now. So we decided to host the Christmas card program first to see how it went,” said Jennifer.
