The City of Estevan is optimistic the rebuild and resurfacing project for Sixth Street and Souris Avenue South could be finished before the end of October.
Sixth Street from 13th Avenue to Souris Avenue South, and Souris Avenue South from Sixth Street to Fourth Street have been closed since Sept. 21. When the work began, it was expected the roads would be shut down for about a month.
City manager Amber Smale said the project is on schedule.
“We’ve replaced a lot of concrete curbing, which happened at the start,” said Smale. “We’ve closed off some abandoned water holes, adjusted some water valves and some curb stops, and then most of the work was just surface work. They’ve mulched all the pavement, and taken it away.”
She was optimistic the resurfacing of the two roads could begin on Oct. 13 and be completed in four days. Line painting would also have to happen before the roads could reopen.
Smale is hopeful the two roads could be open again during the week of Oct. 19.
Local motorists have handled the road closures well, but businesses on the affected roads are eager to see the project finished, so they can return to normal operations.
The traffic lights at the intersection of Sixth Street and 13th Avenue were shut down a few days before the project began, after a vehicle struck a power pole. A three-way stop has been set up at the intersection for the last few weeks.
Power has been restored to the lights, but the city has opted to keep the three-way stop in place until the resurfacing project is completed.
