SARCAN closes Estevan location and other facilities in Saskatchewan

SARCAN Recycling has made the decision to indefinitely close its network of recycling facilities, including Estevan, effective March 21.

SARCAN Recycling has made the decision to indefinitely close its network of recycling facilities, including Estevan, effective March 21.

In a news release, SARCAN said the global spread of COVID-19 is affecting everyone in Saskatchewan, and it will take everybody working together to minimize the damage caused by the virus.

“One lesson that we are all learning in Canada is that the most effective way to minimize risk of the virus’ transmission is to reduce density and maximize social distance.”

Employment creation is at the core of SARCAN’s values. As rates of new infections continue to grow in our province, SARCAN is acting to protect the health and wellbeing of its 700 dedicated recyclers, along with its customers, partners and communities.

At this time, all hourly workers will continue to receive pay in alignment with their usually scheduled hours.

“Our employees are SARCAN’s greatest asset,” said executive director Amy McNeil. “We are committed to doing everything we can to keep our employees healthy, safe and financially secure during these unpredictable times.”

SARCAN is committed to reopening its network of locations once it is safe to do so. They encourage customers to save their deposit beverage containers, paint and electronics for their next SARCAN visit once they reopen.

SARCAN Recycling will be working with provincial health authorities to determine the appropriate time to reopen facilities to the public.

“We encourage you to check our website and our social media channels for updates on our reopening date.”

Now is the time for all of Saskatchewan and the rest of Canada to pull together to do everything they can to limit the spread of this virus, SARCAN said. Through this collaborative effort, they hope to be back recycling in the near future.
