Between March 1 and April 16, the Saskatchewan RCMP received 894 COVID-19 related calls for service within the Saskatchewan RCMP’s provincial jurisdictions.
These calls for service can be broken down into the following: 229 complaints of social gatherings of over 10 people; 395 complaints of people failing to self-isolate when allegedly required to do so and 270 other COVID-19 related complaints. The total number of charges laid between March 1 and April 16 amounted to 13.
The vast majority of these calls for RCMP service were resolved by educating members of the public of the potential health and enforcement consequences. Related calls could result from non-compliance with the Public Health Order.
The Saskatchewan RCMP will continue to work closely with Saskatchewan Health Authorities to investigate any potential violations of the order.
Police officers are responsible for ensuring their actions do not put others at risk, while doing their part to slow the spread of the virus. The RCMP need the public to act responsibly as well and this begins with the simple act of staying home and avoiding situations where there is a potential to spread the virus.
The Saskatchewan RCMP detachments will remain open throughout the province. Moreover, local police officers within their communities will continue to be present and respond to calls for service, as well as ensuring public safety.
