Many different values and responsibilities have been taught to Shayla and Kaylan Moore through their participation in 4-H. Both children love living on the farm with parents Darren and Sharla Moore, and enjoy working with their animals.
Shayla, age 10, has been involved with 4-H for four years. "We get to ride horses and work with our steers," said Shayla. "We learn how to brush our horses properly, and the order of brushing. We also learn how to show your horse."
She particularly loves riding her horses. "You can have friends over and go for a trial ride. You can have fun too, and you can win trophies at shows."
Another aspect of 4-H is working with steers. "At the start, we go through a lot learning about working with our steers. By the end of the year we get to show them at the fair," said Shayla. "The fair is fun because there are a lot of different clubs and we have achievement day."
Things are already going good for Shayla while working with her steer for the upcoming 4-H steers. For the first time, she was able to lead the steer on her own, without the help of her father Darren.
One of her favourite things about being involved in 4-H is being involved in fundraisers. "We raise money for 4-H through a bottle drive, or selling Mom's Pantry," said Shayla.
Kaylan, age six, has started his first year of 4-H. He really likes being able to ride his horse and working with the steers.
"My horse Bubbles is pretty funny," said Kaylan. "When I have treats with me and bring them out, he always chases me."
He is learning a lot about the proper way to brush both his horse and his steer, Buddy.
Through participation in 4-H Shayla and Kaylan also get experience in public speaking.
Mother, Sharla noted that both their teachers have commented that the children do excellent presenting in front of the class because of the public speaking training through 4-H.
There are a lot of interesting aspects to growing up on a farm. "You can play outside, in big tall snowbanks," said Shayla. "You can climb trees."
"It is really nice to be able to have horses and calves," said Kaylan. "I have a lot of fun."
The 4-H program strives to encourage individual growth in young people by developing self-confidence, the ability to make wise decisions and a responsible attitude toward community service.
