A focused “slow to 60” traffic blitz was held by the Weyburn Police Combined Traffic Services along with their partner agencies, Regina Police Combined Traffic Services, Canadian Pacific Police, and Weyburn RCMP Traffic Services. The blitz was focused on Moose Jaw area highways and focused traffic enforcement in the City of Weyburn and area on May 23 and 24.
On Moose Jaw area highways on May 23, Police issued 49 Provincial Statute tickets, 11 Warnings, 4 Vehicle, Inspections, & 1 Criminal Code Charge for Impaired Operation by Drug. Police continue to see motorists failing to slow to 60km/h for emergency vehicles and construction crews/zones. Fines have recently increased; however, we remind everyone that the biggest costs are that of injury and life.
Police focused traffic enforcement in the City of Weyburn at Railway Crossings and high traffic areas on May 24. There were 35 Provincial Statute tickets, 17 Warnings, and seven Inspection tickets were issued. Also of note, at approximately 06:38 hours, members of the Weyburn Combined Traffic Services and Weyburn RCMP Traffic Services were dispatched to a RID call near Midale. Subsequently, Weyburn RCMP Traffic Services charged a 64-year-old male with Impaired Care & Control of a Motor Vehicle/ Care & Control Exceed 0.08.
It appears that Weyburn motorist are still failing to abide by seatbelt laws and continue to take part in distracted driving practices; be it cell phone use or other distracted driving activities. Police were unable to stop all motorists observed failing to abide by these traffic laws as our team members were already on traffic stops. Please note, fines and demerits are costly but more so, offenders are putting themselves and others at risk while not abiding by these laws. Several additional traffic blitzes are in the planning stages for Weyburn and area over the summer.
