A special air quality statement has been issued by Environment Canada for southeast Saskatchewan, due to smoke originating from intense wildfires over southern Manitoba.

That smoke is expected to drift into southeast Saskatchewan Thursday.

According to the advisory, issued at 4:28 a.m., numerous intense wildfires are currently burning in southern and central Manitoba. while some smaller fires are occurring over the eastern grainbelt. Northeast winds across the region are expected to direct smoke from these fires into southeast Saskatchewan, creating localized poor air quality.

Due to these smoky conditions, individuals are advised to be aware of potential health concerns that can be associated with poor air quality. This is especially true for persons living directly downwind of these fires where poor air quality and reduced visibilities in smoke are likely.

In these areas, and even in less affected areas, some individuals may experience sore eyes, tears, coughing and a runny nose.

Higher pollution levels may persist through to Saturday.

Individuals may experience symptoms such as increased coughing, throat irritation, headaches or shortness of breath. Children, seniors, and those with cardiovascular or lung disease, such as asthma, are especially at risk.

People with lung diseases, such as asthma and COPD, can be particularly sensitive to air pollution. They will generally experience more serious health effects at lower levels. Pollution can aggravate their diseases, leading to increased medication use, doctor and emergency room visits, and hospital visits.

If you or those in your care are exposed to wildfire smoke, consider taking extra precautions to reduce your exposure. Wildfire smoke is a constantly-changing mixture of particles and gasses which includes many chemicals that can harm your health.
