The life of St. Francis of Assisi is celebrated on October 4 worldwide.

St. Francis was an Italian Monk who led a very simple life. He is the patron saint of animals. To recognize his love of animals, a number of Anglican churches across Canada hold a Blessing of the Animals service early in October of each year.

Last year, the All Saints Church in Weyburn joined in this tradition. On October 6, the second annual Bless the Animals service, where pets are blessed by a priest, will be held in the All Saints parish.

Everyone with a pet, or who loves animals, is welcome to attend. There are no restrictions about pet owners' religious affiliation or type of animal. Larger animals may have to be blessed in the churchyard, but dogs, cats, birds and smaller animals will be welcomed inside the church. The only stipulation is that pets are brought by responsible owners.

Following the service a presentation of donations will be made to the Weyburn Humane Society. Treats will be provided for the animals and coffee, and cookies will be provided for their owners and friends.
