The annual and regular meeting of the Town and Country Women was held at the home of Ruth Prost. It was a very wintry day. The Club Woman’s Creed was repeated by all. The Thought of the Day was “love cures people — both those who give it and those who receive it.”
Margaret Lukey, president of the Town and Country Women, opened the meeting and gave the president’s report of the year’s activities. There were eight regular meetings held, with very interesting and educational programs in the seven different convenerships. The roll call, answered by each one present at the meetings, added further thought to the topic of the day.
The lap robe project is carried on each year and robes are distributed to nursing homes in Weyburn. The club appreciated the help that they have received with this project. The lap robe size is 30”-by-36” and can be knitted, crocheted or made from fleece.
During the summer day tour, the club visited the Burns House bed and breakfast between Pangman and Ogema. They also traveled to Ogema to ‘Solo Italia’, the pizza shop, and had a demonstration of Italian pizza making and baking in the oven that the owner had built himself.
Many donations have been given in the past year, including: the Weyburn and District United Way Communithon, Saskatchewan Abilities Council, Camp Easter Seal, Telemiracle and Weyburn Canadian Mental Health Association.
Ruth Prost, vice president of the Town and Country Women, reported that birthday greetings are sent to each of their members. She is the club historian and photographer and keeps a scrapbook for programs and special activities. Ruth plans and acts as tour guide for the annual summer trip. Reports of conveners programs from the past year were given by: Ruth Prost for agriculture, Kathryn Groshong for arts and literature; Clara Bill for citizenship and legislation; Lynn Rederburg for education and cultural activities; and Margaret Lukey for environment.
Kathryn Groshong, secretary for the club, read the minutes for the last annual general meeting, and the last regular meeting of the club. She is also the news reporter for the club.
The nominating committee of Ruth Prost and Margaret Lukey brought in their slate of officers for the 2017-2018 year. Margaret Lukey will be president, Ruth Prost will be vice president, Kathryn Groshong is secretary and news reporter, Edith Jacobs is treasurer. Ruth Prost is also the historian, and courtesy and gift chair.
Committee chairs include Vie Flaten for agriculture, Ruth Prost for arts and literature, Kathryn Groshong for international relations, citizenship and legislation, Clara Bell for education and cultural activities, Lynn Rederburg for environment, and Margaret Lukey for health and home economics.
The roll call for the annual general meeting was to bring food donations to the Weyburn Canadian Mental Health Association and to host a program item for the Valentine’s party.
This resulted in a collection of food donations, which was delivered, along with a donation to the Weyburn branch of the Canadian Mental Health Association.
There was a comical reading from a recipe book: “How to Preserve a Wife”, ending with the line “garnish her with flowers and candies”. Members shared stories of how they met their husband. A scrapbook from Dravland’s School Reunion was passed around, with an original Valentine made by students for the teacher in 1945.
Lunch was served by hostess Ruth Prost. “Happy Birthday” was sung to Ruth for her birthday, which was held on Feb. 25.
