Traffic and drug charges handled by Weyburn Police

The Weyburn Police Service experienced a busy week receiving 89 calls for service during the period of December 14to 21, resulting in a total of 28 charges being laid.

The Weyburn Police Service experienced a busy week receiving 89 calls for service during the period of December 14to 21, resulting in a total of 28 charges being laid.  Among the 28 charges, 12 were under the Criminal Code, 9 under the Traffic Safety Act, and 3 under the Controlled Drugs and Substances Act.

On Monday, police received an early morning call to remove an unruly individual from a residence.  The individual had left prior to police arrival, but was located and found to be intoxicated. The intoxicated individual was lodged until sober, no charges were laid.

A traffic stop by Halbrite involving Weyburn CTSS resulted in two individuals facing numerous charges, including possession of a controlled substance, breach of release conditions, impaired operation of a conveyance, and possession of a weapon for a dangerous purpose.  Through investigation the two individuals were also charged with arson relating to recent residential fire deliberately set on the east side of the City.  The pair have been released from custody with numerous conditions and an upcoming court appearance.

On Dec 15th, officers responded to a motor vehicle collision at the intersection of Highway 39 and 3rd Street South.  A southbound vehicle went through a red light and struck an eastbound vehicle.  The driver of the eastbound vehicle was transported to hospital with minor injuries.  The driver of the southbound vehicle was charged under the Traffic Safety Act for disobeying a red light.

A similar collision also occurred on Friday at the intersection of Highway 39 and Government Road, resulting in a driver being charged with disobeying a red light.  This incident occurred shortly after 6:00pm with the Weyburn Fire Department and Weyburn EMS attending to assist.

A traffic stop conducted on Friday, resulted in an individual being charged under the Alcohol and Gaming Regulation Act for unlawfully having alcohol in a vehicle.  The individual was issued a fine of $360.

 On Sunday, a traffic stop resulted in a driving suspension, vehicle impound, and a fine for one motorist.  A roadside demand was performed on the driver resulting in a positive hit for cannabis.  An amount of cannabis was also located in the vehicle.  In addition, the passenger of the vehicle was found to have open alcohol and also charged accordingly.

Throughout the week, WPS members also dealt with several wellbeing checks, false alarms, Covid-19 compliance matters, and suspicious persons or activities.
