Members of the Estevan Combined Traffic Services unit were busy in the final days of May and the first part of June.

According to numbers supplied by the unit, they issued 42 speeding tickets in the seven days from June 4 to 10. It accounted for the bulk of their infractions.

They also handed out seven tickets to drivers who were failing to wear a seatbelt, two who disobeyed a stop sign and one who had illegal vehicle tint.

Officers also issued 23 warnings for various offences, and one inspection notice.

For the week of May 28 to June 3, there were 32 speeding tickets handed out. One was for a motorist who was driving more than 35 kilometres per hour above the speed limit.

Six more tickets were for operating an unregistered vehicle, one was for failing to comply with a license restriction and one was for unlawful window tint.

There were also 20 warnings and one inspection notice.

The unit covers southeast Saskatchewan, and has eight officers, including six from the RCMP and two from the Estevan Police Service.

Unit members are also reminding the public that it is illegal to drive more than 60 kilometres per hour while driving past an emergency vehicle with its lights on. This applies to vehicles travelling in both directions on undivided highways. It does not apply to motorists travelling in the opposite direction on divided highways.

The legislation applies to fire trucks, fire department apparatus, ambulances, police vehicles, and other vehicles being used in response to an emergency, or deemed to be an emergency vehicle.
