Hundreds of participants and volunteers took part in the Ovarian Cancer Canada (OCC) Regina Walk of Hope on September 7. The annual fundraising event, which took place from 11:30 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. at Rick Hansen Park in Regina, raised $74,601.
The local Regina committee of volunteers, co-chaired by Wendy Sutherland and Joanne Gasper, along with the hundreds of walkers including ovarian cancer survivors and families, were very thrilled with the results. Sunday's walk is the largest one-day event in Canada that raises awareness and money solely for the fight against ovarian cancer in support of the only national charity. According to Sutherland, "The money raised today in Regina, along with the thousands of dollars raised across the country will truly help in our battle to fight ovarian cancer. We are thrilled with the support and we would like to thank all our participants, volunteers and sponsors who helped make today's Ovarian Cancer Walk of Hope so very special and rewarding."
The Ovarian Cancer Canada Regina Walk of Hope 's opening ceremonies took place with Councillor Sharon Bryce, representing the City of Regina, along with inspirational speeches from special guests including Anne Taylor, a 10 year survivor of stage 4 ovarian cancer, and Anne Chase, Ambassador of Ovarian Cancer Canada and coordinator of the Saskatchewan Ovarian Cancer Survivor Group (SOCS). After the 2.5 km or 5 km walk, Team Spirit awards were presented as well as acknowledgements of Top Individual Fundraisers and Top Teams.
Regina was one of 45 locations across the country conducting the annual Ovarian Cancer Canada Walk of Hope. The walks began in 2002 by Peggy Truscott, an ovarian cancer survivor, and are organized by volunteer committees in each community.
The walk is held in September which is Ovarian Cancer Awareness Month.
