The third annual Walk to End Duchenne will be happening on Saturday, May 12.
The event was initiated by a Weyburn couple, Andrew Kerr and his wife Mandy. The Kerrs have two young sons with Duchenne Muscular Dystrophy. Their boys attend Assiniboia Park Elementary School, which is where registration will begin at 9:00 a.m., with the 5K walk starting at approximately 9:30 a.m. Walkers will travel down Fifth Avenue NE, through Souris Valley and back to the school.
It's still not too late to pledge.Visit endduchenne.ca to register or call the Kerrs at 842-0849.
Last year the walk in Weyburn raised $15,500 with over 60 people participating and in total the group has so far raised $35,000 for Jesse's Journey. Based in Ontario, Jesse's Journey focuses on researching treatments and cures for muscular dystrophy.
Kerr recently presented APES with the "Best Foot Forward" award from Jesse's Journey for raising the most money per capita out of all elementary schools in Canada.
Duchenne Muscular Dystrophy is a progressive muscle disorder that mainly affects boys. As they age, they get weaker, generally becoming wheelchair bound by age 12. They only have a life expectancy into their mid twenties.
