The Weyburn Chamber of Commerce held its Presidents Dinner and Annual General Meeting on March 26 at the Royal Canadian Legion.
The Chamber of Commerce introduced their new board of directors with Rodney Gill, community marketing manager at RBC, as president.
Other members of the Chamber of Commerce are: Larry Heggs, Jim Fahlman, Jeff Chessall, Twila Walkeden, Jerry Ponto, Brent Allin, Scott Paxman, Marliss Gilchrist, Jeff Walkeden, Chris Minard and Kurtis Bourassa.
The Deputy Premier and Minister of Finance Ken Krawetz was the guest speaker for the evening.
During the Presidents Dinner, the Chamber of Commerce honours someone in the community for their dedication to Weyburn.
Since 1982, the Golden Spike Award has been presented to someone who has made outstanding contributions to the community over the years. The 2014 Golden Spike Award was presented to Kim Thorson.
"He has been involved in Weyburn's business community for decades as an entrepreneur and also as a leader," said Chamber outgoing president Jeff Chessall.
In addition to his entrepreneurial endeavours, Thorson has also made an impact in civic engagement with the Weyburn Co-op, the United Church, the Humane Society, the United Way, Rotary Club, Soo Line Historical Museum and most recently as president of the Weyburn and District Hospital Foundation.
Thorson served two terms as MLA for the area, 1956 to 1960 and 1971 to 1975.
"I am conscious of the honour that comes with this award. I asked myself, how could this happen? The answer is, because of the help of many other people," said Thorson upon accepting the award.
In quoting Lester B. Pearson's wife who said "behind every successful man, there is a surprised woman," Thorson thanked his own wife, Myrtle for all the support she has shown her husband over the years.
He also thanked the people who contributed to the success in business, namely Don Horner and the people he has worked with over the years.
"I appreciate this award. I'm thankful for my home, my work and the people of this community."
