WEYBURN – City council unanimously approved an application for a home-based business permit to open a nail salon.
The application, submitted by Nhu Dao, sought permission to operate a small nail salon out of her home, a personal service business that would bring clients to her home.
In her report to council, Shara-Lee Malcolm, planning and developing co-ordinator, said that while the business fell under the city’s definition of a controversial home-based business, due to clients visiting the property, the approval process had gone smoothly.
When the item was brought before council, there was little discussion with no councillors raising concerns.
Under the city’s zoning bylaws, such businesses require a neighbourhood notification process, giving nearby residents a chance to voice concerns. Notices had been mailed out on June 10 to all homes within 50 metres of Dao’s property. But there were no objections.
Dao’s proposed hours, 8 a.m. to 9 p.m., seven days a week, were within acceptable limits, and and she anticipates only one client vehicle at a time, with parking available in her driveway. The business would be small-scale, ensuring it didn’t disrupt the quiet residential neighbourhood.
Home-based businesses are permitted in Weyburn as long as they follow certain rules, such as remain secondary to the home, avoid excessive traffic, and not disrupt the area’s residential feel. After reviewing the application, city staff said they were satisfied that Dao’s nail salon met all requirements.
